Just When I Think I Have No Tears Left…

… here comes a condolence card from the veterinary office that tried to save Jacques from the coyote attack. It’s signed by the whole staff, and little Jacques’ pawprint is stamped on the back. I don’t even have words. Lots of tears, but no words could ever adequately define what I’m feeling. They didn’t even know the gentle soul who hugged our hearts or how truly special he was. But they tried to save him, even though he was brought in by a stranger and they therefore had no idea if they’d ever even get paid for their efforts.
God bless them, and Daneen, the woman who delivered him to them, every day that they all live. What a truly sweet gesture. Reading the card brought the pain back, but it was worth it just to know that the people who cared for him in his last hours really and truly cared.
Both of our beloved dogs were taken from us because some fool opened the gate and let them run, and they ran right into a pack of coyotes they couldn’t defend themselves against. They didn’t know what they were running into, and honestly, the coyotes were probably only defending themselves against what they probably perceived as a danger to their pups. Nicholas pointed out that Jacques was much faster than Trixie, and believes that he stayed behind to try to protect her. I think he’s right. The last thought on Jacques’ mind was how devastated we would be by losing them both: he only knew he needed to protect his sister, and though my heart is shattered I guess I would have expected nothing less from him.
Though both our dogs are now gone, Nicholas and I still have two cats: Karma and Lucy. And because of the love and compassion the Quartz Hill Veterinary Clinic showed to Jacques in his final hours, Karma and Lucy now have a new doctor. God forbid anything should ever happen to either of them, but if it does I want to know they’re in the hands of people who truly care.
